Dr. Leong from 2004-2017 had a joint clinical and research appointment at the Mater Children’s Hospital then the new Lady Cilento, and now the Queensland Children’s Hospital and The University of Queensland Institute for Molecular Bioscience, where he conducted clinical and basic research into child obesity, growth and metabolism.
He is now primarily working in Sydney but conducts monthly clinics in Brisbane at the Taylor Medical Centre and is open to be contacted via the practice for case discussion and advice to referral practitioners.
Dr Leong currently has a clinical and research appointment in Western Sydney at the Nepean Hospital Charles Perkins Centre Research Hub ((https://www.sydney.edu.au/charles-perkins-centre/. He is the clinical paediatric lead of the Nepean Blue Mountains Family Metabolic Service, a unique multidisciplinary whole of life span service that covers clients with severe obesity and its complications during pregnancy, childhood, adolescence to young and mature adulthood. He has memberships of several national and international paediatric endocrine and endocrine research societies and was the former Chair of the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group Growth Hormone Advisory Committee, which helped the Federal Department of Health provide expert advice on children with short stature treated with growth hormone therapy

Dr.Leong is a honorary member of the NHMRC Research Translation Faculty. He was the recipient of a Fogarty International Scholarship for his NIH Fellowship; he received a NHMRC medical post-graduate scholarship for his PhD studies, a NHMRC Health Professional Fellowship for his post-graduate research and then a NHMRC Career Development Award from 2006-2011. He also received two NHMRC project grants and various other prestigious peer-reviewed competitive grants and awards during his clinical and research career from 1992-current. These have included the “Applied Sciences” Edman Award from the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society of Bone Mineral Research John Haddad Award, the USA Endocrine Society Bridge Grant Award, Vincent Fairfax Family RACP Foundation Research Fellowship, the Merrill Lynch RACP Research Foundation Award in Child Health, a Queensland Smart State Clinical Fellowship, an ANZ Trustees Children’s Medical Research Establishment Award, a Qld Smart State Clinical Fellowship and a Queensland Senior Clinical Academic Fellow in Child Obesity Research and Prevention.
Dr. Leong sees infants, children and adolescents into young adulthood with disorders of growth and puberty, thyroid disorders, obesity and insulin resistance and pre-type 2 diabetes including:
- short stature
- early and delayed puberty
- thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism)
- disorders of the pituitary gland
- lifestyle disorders such as child and adolescent obesity, insulin resistance and pre-type 2 diabetes.
